Times are tough right now, and looking for a design job when you’re fairly new to the role is even tougher. There is so much we can be doing to improve our odds of getting hired, like doing some freelance work, personal projects, networking virtually, updating our portfolios, etc.

When working with a career coach, I heard a good breakdown of where those of us looking for a job should be spending our time: 15% applying, 15% working on our skills, 10% editing portfolio/resume, and 60% networking and making new contacts.

Today, I’m going to focus on the 15% of our time that we should be spending applying to jobs. Because honestly, there’s a lot of time that I spend just wondering where I should even look to be finding new jobs. So I decided to go on a hunt and collect what I think are the best job boards to look for a design role.

  • Dribbble — Of course we all know dribbble as a place to share our great work, but it also serves as a place to look for new design gigs, or get hired freelance based on your profile.
  • Design Gigs for Good — This board is run 100% by volunteers, and roles are posted with a focus on serving non-profits or initiatives aiming to, as the name implies, do good.
  • Linkedin — no introduction needed.
  • Builtin — Jobs and information posted here seems mainly aimed at tech companies, specifically smaller startups. There aren’t a million postings, but still a solid place to look.
  • AngelList — Postings here are for startups, but I like it a lot because it gives you the company size and salary at first glance, rather than wondering what they might pay. Normally you also get the name of the person hiring, so it makes for easier networking.
  • Behance — functions similar to dribbble.
  • Creativepool
  • Working Nomads — These postings are specifically for people who want to work remote, so keep that in mind!
  • AIGA
  • IxDA
  • UX Jobs Board
  • Krop
  • Authentic Jobs
